Why now is a great time to build your own business
There has never been a better moment to start or buy a business in Canada.
Why are we saying this?
1. A wave of retiring business owners
Thousands of Canadian business owners are getting ready to retire. A study from 2023 found that nearly two-thirds (64%) don’t have a clear succession plan, which means thousands of businesses will soon need new owners.
This opens huge opportunities for newcomers who want to buy an existing business or start something new to fill those gaps.
2. AI is removing barriers and speeding things up
Artificial intelligence is changing everything. Fast. What used to take a team can now be done by one person with the right tools.
Experts are even predicting the first “one-person unicorn” (a billion-dollar company) built by a solo founder using AI.
For newcomers, this means starting lean, moving faster, and competing on a global level without needing a big team or budget.

3. More funding and support are available
Across Canada, new programs are helping people, especially women and newcomers, start and buy businesses.
The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) recently launched a $50 million fund to help women entrepreneurs buy companies from retiring owners.
It’s part of a larger trend: more opportunities, more funding, and more people who want to see you succeed.
